Advisory and research work for Korean government ministries and public institutions, principally on international trade and investment, cross-border transactions, and public procurement.

This includes commissioned policy research, comparative legal analysis drawing on both Korean and common law jurisdictions, support on the drafting and interpretation of international agreements, and advice on public procurement and bidding frameworks. 

Examples of work

  • Commissioned policy research and legislative proposals in trade law, including assessment of proposed Korean legislation for consistency with international obligations

  • Comparative analysis of foreign regulatory regimes, drawing on both Korean and common law jurisdictions

  • Advice on obligations under international agreements, including support for the negotiation of free trade agreements and investment treaties, and on the State's exposure under investment treaty claims

  • Public procurement and bidding rules, advising contracting authorities on the treatment of foreign suppliers

Selected Matters

  • ​Advised the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Resources on questions of international trade and investment law.

  • Advised a government-funded research institute in the maritime and ocean engineering sector on standard forms of cooperation and research service agreements with overseas research institutions.

  • Advised major Korean financial institutions on US economic sanctions affecting transactions connected to Iran, Russia, and North Korea.

  • Advised a Korean state-owned enterprise on its options following a foreign government's final refusal of approval for an overseas development project.
